Potato Virus Y (PVY) is a pathogen which can give severe damages to solanaceous crops, which are potato, tobacco, pepper, tomato and etc. PVY could infect by other kinds sap artificially but infects by aphid in nature. The green peach aphid infects the most effectively and next one is cotton aphid. A lot of kinds of aphid transmit the virus. The green peach aphid acquires and contains the virus for 20 seconds. There is no latent period because It is non-persistent type of virus. The insect which contains virus looses infectious ability in a short time. The virus which infects to leave or stem transmit to tuber in a week and can reduce yields 30~50%.
The damage from the virus to the plant must be prevented in advance by increasing disease tolerance and blocking the virus invasion. The most effective way to increase disease tolerance of virus is the injection of part or full virus gene to the plant which we would like to apply. There are three ways to diagnosis disease at the early stage. First, examining the symptom of potatoes by naked eyes. Second, examining by extracting and growing virus. Third, diagnosing at the gene level (DNA profiling). DNA profiling will be the most effective way to diagnose disease because PCR method would produce mass amounts of virus in a short time. The PCR method which takes less than 8 hours is the cost-effective way because many samples can be diagnosed at once and inexpensive compared to other methods. This product, RT-PCR premix included PVY specific primer set, is guaranteed accurate and fast result.
