Potato Virus M(PVM) is the family of Carlavirus, the most of them shows latent symptoms, but transmitted by infected sap and aphid in a non-persistent manner. Infected tissue has inclusion body.
Type species : Potato Virus M
Synonyms: Kartoffel-K-Virus, Kartoffel-Rollmosaik-Virus, potato paracrinkle virus (Bagnall et al., 1959; Kassanis, 1961; 1963; Salaman and Le Pelly, 1930) potato virus E.
It is 650nm sized and liner shape virus. PVM is a very common virus of potato (Solanum tuberosum) which it occurs naturally. In Korea, symptoms of potato are mottle and mosaic. It is easily transmitted mechanically by aphids in a non-persistent manner. It easily finds at potato harvesting area. It is inactive at 65~75℃ and the dilution limit is hundred thousand time, and stored limit is 2~3 days. Cytoplasm of infected cell is scattered by virus particles.
In case of infecting by PVM, yield reduces 10~20%. PVM are needed to diagnosis precisely because there is no symptom of infection. Especially young seedling and seeding of tissue culture are needed to diagnosis precisely since it is hard to diagnosis serologically.
The damage from the virus to the plant must be prevented in advance by increasing disease tolerance and blocking the virus invasion. The most effective way to increase disease tolerance of virus is the injection of part or full virus gene to the plant which we would like to apply. There are three ways to diagnosis disease at the early stage. First, examining the symptom of potatoes by naked eyes. Second, examining by extracting and growing virus. Third, diagnosing at the gene level (DNA profiling). DNA profiling will be the most effective way to diagnose disease because PCR method would produce mass amounts of virus in a short time. The PCR method which takes less than 8 hours is the cost-effective way because many samples can be diagnosed at once and inexpensive compared to other methods. This product, RT-PCR premix included PVM specific primer set, is guaranteed accurate and fast result.
